This advanced online course is designed for qualified massage therapists who want to develop deeper knowledge and confidence when working with clients living with complex neurological and neurodegenerative conditions.
The programme brings together specialist training in multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and motor neurone disease within one structured qualification pathway.
Through clinical education, practical adaptation frameworks, case-based learning and symptom-focused clinical reasoning, you will learn how to adapt massage safely and appropriately for clients whose neurological presentation may be complex, fluctuating or progressive.
Topics covered include:
• Neurology foundations and disease processes
• Multiple sclerosis and fluctuating presentations
• Parkinson’s disease, rigidity, tremor and medication timing
• Motor neurone disease, progressive weakness and respiratory considerations
• Fatigue, spasticity, sensory changes, autonomic symptoms and postural instability
• Positioning, pacing, pressure adaptation and the treatment environment
• Communication and consent in complex-care settings
• Contraindications, precautions, red flags and referral considerations
• Professional scope and complementary practice alongside medical and rehabilitation care
• Adapting treatment as a client’s presentation and support needs change
This course is designed for therapists who want to develop a stronger specialism in neurological and neurodegenerative conditions without completing multiple separate specialist pathways.
Why isn’t dementia included in this course?
Dementia is a neurodegenerative condition, but we teach it separately because the clinical approach is different.
This course focuses primarily on conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, motor neurone disease and multiple sclerosis, where therapists often need to adapt massage around changes in movement, muscle tone, strength, fatigue, sensation, mobility and positioning.
With dementia, the greater emphasis is often on changes in cognition, communication, behaviour, sensory processing, consent and emotional response.
For this reason, dementia has its own specialist training, allowing us to explore these areas in much greater depth and teach an approach specifically designed for working with people living with dementia.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
Describe the clinical presentation of major neurodegenerative conditions relevant to massage therapy practice
Recognise symptom patterns across multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and motor neurone disease
Adapt massage sessions safely for progressive and fluctuating neurological presentations
Modify positioning, pacing, pressure, and environment based on individual presentation
Recognise contraindications, red flags, and referral requirements
Apply communication and consent strategies in complex-care environments
Understand the role of complementary bodywork within wider neurological and rehabilitation care
Work more confidently with clients living with progressive neurological conditions
